Designing a Safer, More Connected Corridor

North Ford Street is a critical north-south corridor for the City and should provide accessible, connected and safe travel for all travel modes while serving the current needs and future goals of nearby neighborhoods and Golden residents.

The City of Golden has launched the North Ford Complete Street Design project, which aims to increase accessibility, connectivity and safety along the North Ford Street corridor between SH93 and 10th Street. The project design will:

  • Improve the sidewalk immediately adjacent to the roadway
  • Expand connectivity between Ford Street, Cressman Gulch Trail and Tucker Gulch Trail to create a comfortable and connected corridor for cyclists
  • Implement traffic calming to address persistent speeding
  • Craft a strategic parking design to serve the needs of residents while improving pedestrian visibility

Project Design Timeline

The first phase of the design project will begin by gathering public input on current transportation conditions and the goals and aspirations of the community for an improved corridor. Design alternatives will be shared with the community at a Fall 2025 open house with an accompanying survey, and opportunities for small group meetings that are neighborhood focused.

Phase 2 of the project, in Summer 2026, will share a refined corridor design based on community feedback and include an additional design open house.

Construction of the project is dependent on identifying local, state and/or federal funding.

Community Engagement Opportunities

Preferred Alternative Open House - January 28, 2026, 5:30 - 7:00PM at the Golden Community Center. The project team will present the preferred alternative that has been developed based on community feedback to date. This will be an opportunity for the neighborhood and project team to confirm the preferred alternative as the basis for future engineering design plans that will be developed in 2026.

The project will build on past traffic calming, speed limit and shared use path projects that have been completed along the corridor.

  • Initial Community Survey - Open July 30 through August 18
  • Preliminary Alternatives Analysis Open House (October 9, 2025)
  • Preliminary Alternatives Analysis Community Survey (October 9 - 23, 2025)
  • Neighborhood Small Group Meetings (December 4 and 11, 2025)
  • Preferred Alternative Open House (January 28, 2026)
  • Final Design Open House (July/August 2026)

  • Share Mr. Wempe and Mr. Puhr, There are numerous apartments located in Zone 3, many of which offer lower housing costs relative to much of Golden. One of the alternatives being considered in Zone 2, Alternative 3, completely eliminates street parking. Do you believe the property owners and tenants in Zone 2 have been provided adequate opportunity for feedback regarding these potential impacts? As a property owner within this zone, I have not received any direct communication or letters from the city making me aware of this project or how to provide input. I am concerned that the outreach efforts have been insufficient. The alternatives analysis phase of the project has looked at all options for the future street design.  Public feedback to date hasn't been supportive of on-street parking removals on both sides of the street.  Residents have expressed openness to partial parking removals to create the space for wider sidewalks and an uphill bike lane (for at least the south portion of the corridor).  The preferred alternative open house on January 28, 2026 will be an opportunity for the neighborhood to tell us if we've got the right concept prior to starting full engineering design.

City staff are confident that the project’s community engagement plan has and will continue to garner extensive resident feedback throughout the North Ford corridor.  The Guiding Golden page outlines past and future engagement milestones, including two surveys and three public meetings to date.  Each of these milestones has been advertised via the Golden Informer and Highlights print publications sent to every Golden address, the Weekly Update email, City social media and flyers at local businesses in downtown and north Golden.  City staff have been excited to engage with over 50 people at the first open house, over 20 people at each small group meeting and hear from over 150 people on each survey.  Most importantly, we’ve directly engaged with approximately 40% of property owners living on Ford Street itself.  We’re committed to continuing this robust community engagement and look forward to additional surveys and public meetings to create a street design supported by the neighborhood.  Interested residents can sign up for project notifications on Guiding Golden to stay updated on future engagement opportunities.

Thank you for the feedback on this project.  We'll fold this into the overall feedback on the draft alternatives that will be reviewed at the October 9 open house.

The City has funded a trail courtesy campaign for all cyclists that led by BikeWalkGolden.  We'll continue to stress the rules of the trails and courtesy expectations, especially along Tucker and Cressman Gulch Trails which can be higher speed due to the topography.
