Consultation has concluded

Lubahn Trail

UPDATE:  3-7-2022

As a result of the public survey and follow up discussion by the Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board (PRAM), a recommendation was made to City Council during the March 18, 2021 Advisory Board meeting to work with Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) and create an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) that would include a short-term review, and an agreement to manage and maintain the Lubahn Trail.  On May 11, 2021, Council supported the recommendation and staff began working with Jefferson County to finalize an RFP for construction of the restoration. In January of 2022, staff applied for and received $87,500 from the JCOS Trails Partnership Program to support construction costs.

Since then, JCOS selected a proposal and will manage the contract with Singletrack Trails (who have a history of trail restoration) to make maintenance updates to the Lubahn Trail. The project is scheduled to begin March 14, 2022, depending on the weather. Trail enthusiasts and neighbors can expect to see fencing and signage on-site indicating closures during weekdays, when contractors are on site. When contractors are not on site, the Lubahn Trail will remain open. Maintenance is estimated to conclude around June 1, 2022, and is expected to improve trail conditions, visitor safety and resource protection. During this time, the Olivine Trail will remain open.

  • Alternate South Table Mountain Parking and Access: 1219 Kilmer Street

UPDATE: Lubahn Trail Survey Results are now available as well as the recorded Board discussion of the survey results (begins at 1:32:44).

Jefferson County Open Space will coordinate a time to survey the property boundaries at the top of the trail, by request of the Parks, Recreation and Museums Advisory Board.

----------------------------------

The Lubahn Trail, as it is currently configured, is not sustainable. It is a single track, hiker-only trail that commences at 18th Street and Belvedere Street. It was built about 50 years ago and now presents numerous issues:

  • Trail leads to private property including Castle Rock, at the top of South Table Mountain
  • Erosion on the trail and natural areas
  • Shortcutting of the Trail
  • Limited parking in the neighborhood

The City of Golden is seeking feedback to assist a recommendation to City Council on investment to repair, reroute, or close the trail. The survey is now closed, but results will be reviewed during the next Parks, Recreation, and Museums Advisory Board meeting on October 20, 2020, and then posted here on Guiding Golden.
