Implementation of Best Practices for Preservation of Golden's Historic Neighborhoods and Structures
The City of Golden is taking the next steps to implement recommendations from the Historic Preservation Policy Study with the launch of Past Forward. Building on extensive community input from the Study, which was approved in February 2025. The project will include three connected efforts:
Revised Regulations: A complete rewrite of Chapter 18.58 of the Municipal Code, the section that governs historic preservation processes and procedures.
Architectural Guidance: The development of new architectural guidance for the City’s Historic Districts and structures, revising the current Historic District Residential Design Guidelines.
Establishment of Neighborhood Context: The introduction of neighborhood context statements for Golden’s designated historic districts. These statements will document the defining features, development patterns, and architectural styles of each area, offering an essential foundation for preservation planning and decision-making.
Together, these efforts will strengthen the City's ability to celebrate its unique past and foster a sense of place that reflects the values of the Golden community. Past Forward ensures that as Golden continues to thrive, its history remains a visible and valued part of its identity. Engagement efforts are expected to begin in September 2025.
Past Forward Update: Save the Date of September 24, 2025 as we kick off the public engagement phase of the Historic Preservation Guidelines project, with historic district tours hosted by City Staff and our consultant. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about Golden’s historic structures and hear about the progress on the neighborhood context studies, the architectural guidelines and the proposed new regulatory changes.
8th and 9th Street District Tour: 1pm (meeting at 9th and Cheyenne Street)
12th Street District Tour: 2:30pm (meeting at 12th and Arapahoe Street)
East Street Tour: 4pm (Meeting at 17th & East Street)
