Crowds watch fireworks explode in the sky at night.

January 2024 Update

After discussion and community input, the Golden City Council has decided not to proceed with fireworks display for Independence Day for 2024 and beyond.

City staff is working on alternative ways to celebrate Independence Day in partnership with the Lions Club celebration, which will continue in Lions Park. More information will be provided on festivities for 2024.

Background

The City of Golden is seeking input from community members on the best way to celebrate the Fourth of July. The city has long sponsored fireworks displays on the evening of Independence Day. Recently, the use of fireworks displays has presented challenges for communities like ours including:

  • drought and fire danger
  • environmental concerns
  • the impact of noise on people with PTSD and animals
  • supply chain issues
  • weather (which can lead to delays or cancellations)
  • costs for the displays
  • significant personnel resources required to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience

Numerous options have been considered by the City to address these issues, including changing the location of the event, using drones rather than fireworks, and finding other ways to mark the occasion.

Considerations for a city-sponsored Fourth of July event:

DronesFireworksParade, Kids Activities, Other
~$52.5K/150 drones~$45KLess expensive than drones or fireworks

Nighttime eventNighttime eventMorning/afternoon
NO fire hazardFire hazardNO fire hazard
Does not require clean-upNeeds clean-upSome clean-up
QuietNoisyDepends on event, but likely less noisy than fireworks
Can fly up to 30 mph windsCan go up to 20 mph windsWind is not an issue
The show is enjoyable but unexceptional for 150 drones ($50K). Visibility is not great if you are not directly under them.Bigger “wow” factor and can be viewed from many locations in the cityMore interactive for kids and adults
Requires contract well in advance to secure showRequires contract well in advance to secure showLots of time to plan

We want to ensure we hear from and can appropriately honor community members’ desires in celebrating this holiday.

*An important note is that any decision about fireworks will not impact the Lions Club Festival in Lions Park from 12 to 7 p.m. This survey is only intended to seek feedback on the evening arial display.
